Etsy fee questions
What does it cost to sell a $50 item on Etsy?
For a $50 item with $5 buyer-paid shipping: $0.20 listing fee + 6.5% transaction fee on $55 ($3.58) + payment processing of 3% + $0.25 on $55 ($1.90) = about $5.68, roughly 10.3% of the order total. An Offsite Ads attribution would add 12–15% more.
Does Etsy charge fees on shipping?
Yes. Both the 6.5% transaction fee and the 3% + $0.25 payment processing fee apply to the shipping (and gift wrap) amounts you charge the buyer, not just the item price.
Does Etsy charge fees on sales tax?
Partially. The 6.5% transaction fee does not apply to sales tax for US sellers, but the 3% + $0.25 payment processing fee is calculated on the total sale including sales tax — even though Etsy collects and remits that tax for you.
Can I opt out of Etsy Offsite Ads?
Only while your shop has never made $10,000 in any consecutive 365-day period; then the fee is 15% and opting out is allowed. Once you cross $10,000 you're enrolled at a discounted 12% and must participate for the lifetime of your shop. The fee is capped at $100 per order.
Are Etsy's fees different for clothing or collectibles?
No. Etsy charges a flat 6.5% transaction fee across all categories — there are no category-specific rates, tiers, or caps on the core selling fee.
Does Etsy charge a monthly fee to sell?
No mandatory subscription. Ongoing costs are $0.20 per listing every 4 months plus per-sale fees. Etsy Plus ($10/month) and Pattern ($15/month) are optional, and new shops may owe a one-time set-up fee shown during onboarding.
Worth knowing before you list
- Etsy's 3% + $0.25 processing fee is calculated on the entire amount the buyer pays, including sales tax Etsy collects and remits — so you pay processing on tax money you never receive. This calculator can't know the buyer's tax, so processing runs slightly higher in practice.
- The $0.20 listing fee recurs: listings expire every 4 months and auto-renew at $0.20 by default, sold or not. A buyer purchasing 3 units of one listing triggers two extra $0.20 renewal fees.
- Offsite Ads becomes mandatory forever once your shop crosses $10,000 in sales in any consecutive 365-day period — the rate drops to 12% but you can never opt out again. Under $10,000 it's 15% and optional.
- There are no category-based fee differences on Etsy — vintage clothing, jewelry, and craft supplies all pay the same 6.5%.
- Optional extras: Etsy Plus is $10/month, Pattern is $15/month, and onsite Etsy Ads are pay-per-click against a budget you set — none are required to sell.
